No Cookies in the Library

No cookies in the library - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Welcome Tony!

We have a new member of staff in Information Resources and he's a man! Having worked in a mainly female section of ScHARR for over seven years, it's nice to have a fellow 'bloke' join the team. In fact, as Andrew Booth reduces ties with Information Resources to become ScHARR's new Director of Information, you heard it here first folks; it would mean poor little me being the only chap in the library, but Tony has arrived in time to save me from Sex in the City Overload. Please note that the last line is a test to see if my fellow colleagues read these posts; if so I'll be in big trouble no doubt :-(

Anyway, if this does happen to be my last post ever before I mysteriously vanish under a pile of books -I'd like to say it's been fun. Enough of the waffle, I'll let Tony tell you about himself, welcome to the team!

BA hons (University of Essex) Dip Lib (College of Librarianship Wales)

Tony is funded by the Trent RDS to oversee the library’s document supply service. Tony graduated with a degree in Literature and then completed a post-graduate diploma in Librarianship. He first worked at ScHARR Information Resources in a freelance capacity from 2005-7. Prior to that he worked for many years in various non-governmental organisations including for 5 years at Amnesty’s International Secretariat as an Information Officer, and also qualified as a Garden designer.

After moving to Sheffield he combined self-employed work and part-time teaching with a post as a weekend librarian at Sheffield Hallam University and then for 10 years for Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Futures as Resources and Information worker for Sheffield Youth Service. Tony works 2.5 days a week.

Recommended Website of the month

Posted by Andy

Not so much a website as such, but more a search engine. I saw the MSE360 search engine at the MMIT Conference on 'Now That's What I Call Library 2.0'. The premise of the tool is to collate combining images, wikis, blogs and traditional search results on one page. Basically meaning, you don't have to tab through different types of information the same way you would with Google.

I tried out a test search on our own beloved ScHARR Library and found the results to be fairly mixed, although less ambitious searches could prove to be more fruitful. The first six images related to us and six out of the top ten basic search results were related to ScHARR Library. The wiki and blog posts were not too far off the mark as well. Give it a go, if it's not for you, then you could always go back to good old Google.

Inaugural Lecture by Professor Steve Goodacre

‘Academic Emergency Medicine: A Contradiction In Terms?’

Date and Time: 17.15 on 17 November 2008

Venue: Lecture Theatre 2 in the Medical School at the University of Sheffield

This is the inaugural lecture to be given by Professor Steve Goodacre, Professor of Emergency Medicine at ScHARR.

The specialty of emergency medicine developed as a pragmatic response to the increasing numbers of patients arriving unpredictably at hospital with potentially time-critical complaints. As such, it has often appeared to value practice over theory, action over observation, and intuition over analysis. Furthermore, time pressures and an unpredictable workload have made the emergency department a challenging environment for research. These factors could lead us to conclude that academic emergency medicine is an unlikely marriage of disciplines. In this lecture, Steve Goodacre will explore the rationale for academic emergency medicine and the implications for undertaking emergency medical research. He will argue that research, far from being alien to emergency medicine, needs to be integral to practice and needs to involve emergency care professionals, their patients and the general public.

The lecture will be followed by a wine reception at approximately 18.00.

Admission to the lecture is free, but we do need to know if you will be attending the lecture and the reception.
It would be appreciated if you would use the form below to let Pat Holmes know by 24 October, if you would like to attend.

Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us

Posted by Andy

This smart little video on been on the Web for some time now, but I thought it would be good to post it on our blog for anyone who haven't stumbled yet. Some of you may agree with what it sets out to show, whilst others think; "well it's not that simple". Web 2.0 is a very ambiguous term in my opinion, one person's view is different to that of another. This is down to the reality that we all have different uses for and interactions with the Internet, we're all explorers and no one has managed to conquer Mount Everest just yet, not even Google. Just to say, if you want to hear about Web 2.0 from an unusual source, go here to listen to England's National Treasure, Stephen Fry talk about the subject; is there nothing this guy doesn't know about? Answers on a postcard to the usual address please.
